SUNDAY AFTERNOON WORKSHOPS FOR 2011

'Musical Awareness' - Sunday 5th June 2011

Feel the Latin Rhythm! - Enhance your dance with greater musical understanding

Feeling and understanding the music is an essential element of dancing and expressing yourself on the dancefloor and affects everything from a basic mambo to interpreting the music with appropriate styling and turn patterns.

This workshop is packed with useful information presented in a fun and interactive way, including the opportunity to see, hear and play lots of salsa percussion instruments typlically found in salsa songs. By the end of this workshop we guarantee that everyone will leave with a better understanding and be able to play together in a group jam session!

The workshop is open to dancers of ALL levels from absolute beginners to advanced and no previous musical knowledge is required.

Presented by Gareth Deats and Basil Pinnock of Dance2Salsa

'Dancing On2' - Sunday 3rd July 2011

This subject is responsible for as much debate as anything else in salsa.
Should you dance 'On1' or 'On2'?
If you dance On2 should you dance using classic or modern timing?
Should you dance the 'Puerto Rican' way, the 'New York' way or Power On2?
Further, should you dance to the Clave, on the Clave, to the Conga or to some other instrument?

The answers to the above and many other questions will be unveiled in this special 3 hour workshop which will demistify the whole debate and clarify your understanding. At the conclusion of this workshop you will have a solid foundation to further develop your understanding of dancing On2 and what this means on the dance floor.

This workshop is targeted at dancers with some experience, i.e. Level 3 (Improvers) and above and is not suitable for absolute beginners.

Presented by Basil Pinnock and Melissa Lambourne of Dance2Salsa.

'Ladies and Men's Styling' - Sunday 4th September 2011

Ladies and men’s Styling is the icing on the cake in salsa dance. It is styling that decorates the dance and gives dancers their individuality and flair. This aspect can add a very exciting dimension to what could be (without this element), a dull and monotonous display. Despite the importance of styling in dance, it is important to ensure that styling does not dominate the dance or impact on a dancers ability to lead or follow.

This workshop will cover the principles involved in styling effectively as well as providing some specific examples to apply immediately on the dance floor. Here the focus will be on quality rather than quantity and how to develop your own ‘style’ within the dance.

Presented by Basil Pinnock and Melissa Lambourne of Dance2Salsa.

'Improving Your Timing and Rhythm In Dance' - Sunday 2nd October 2011

Dancing with your partner can involve a complex connection between and understanding of timing, speed of movement, rhythm, tempo and pulse. If you have been feeling frustrated with your ability to keep time during a dance or you frequently find yourself dancing ‘back to front’ or just want to improve your overall timing then this workshop is for you.

This interactive workshop will look at aspects such as Quick, Quick, Slow, counting On1 and On2, step placement action relative to timing, rhythm of movement, differences in tempo and the importance of pulse as a foundation to timing. Additionally, a thorough understanding of the structure of a salsa song including time signatures, beats, bars and phrases will significantly improve your connection to the music and your partner.

Presented by Basil Pinnock and Melissa Lambourne of Dance2Salsa.
